What is Nutritional Therapy?

Personalized Nutrition

Why work with a nutritional therapist?

Nutritional Therapy is the application of nutrition science in the promotion of health, optimum performance, and individual care.

Nutritional therapists use a wide range of tools to assess and identify potential nutritional imbalances and understand how these may contribute to an individual’s symptoms and health concerns.

Nutritional therapy focuses on identifying and addressing the root cause of the health issue and not just on easing the symptoms.

The therapist will use dietary prescriptions and interventions and occasionally nutritional supplements/nutraceuticals such as vitamins, minerals, and other orthomolecular substances and dietary herbs.

Nutritional Therapist considers everyone to be unique and recommends evidence-based personalized nutrition and lifestyle programs for the specific need of an individual.

Personalized nutrition will consider various factors such as:

  • Your Metabolism - identify metabolic risk factors and assess how your body metabolizes nutrients

  • Your Macro & Micronutrients status - assess how your body might absorb and use nutrients and establish if there are any insufficiencies or deficiencies

  • Your dietary intake of nutrients - assess your nutrients intake & dietary habits through a food diary

  • Toxic exposure & Environmental triggers- assess exposure to environmental toxins, heavy metals, food additives, etc.

  • Microbiome - assess your gut health and how this might affect your metabolism and have an impact on your health

  • Nutrigenomics - the interaction of nutrition and genes - how the food affects genes & how the genes might affect the way the body responds to food

  • Work-life balance, sleep hygiene & exercise - we are more than just what we eat, so supporting your sleep hygiene and exercise is an important part of personalized programs

The therapist never recommends nutritional therapy as a replacement for medical advice and always refers any client with red flag signs or symptoms to their medical professional.

They will also frequently work alongside a medical professional and will communicate with other healthcare professionals involved in the client’s care to explain any nutritional therapy program that has been provided.

People will choose to work with nutritional therapists either to address their specific health issues or simply to improve their diet for better overall health and prevention.

There is so much information about nutrition out there that's easily accessible but often can be very conflicting and confusing.

Nutritional Therapists can point you in the right direction and help you to achieve your goals by focusing on your specific needs and very much on what foods you can eat rather than what you can’t.

Nutritional Therapists can provide you with the tools and knowledge to help you get your health back on track while staying fully in control.
